IND vs SA: Virat Kohli sets another captaincy record, surpasses Mohammad Azharuddin

Team India’s Test captain Virat Kohli achieved a big milestone during the first Test match against South Africa at Centurion’s SuperSport Park on Sunday. On the flip of the coin, Kohli won the toss and made the right call and decided to bat first in poor conditions against a pace attack from South Africa.

With another toss win, Kohli surpassed former captain Mohammad Azharuddin’s number to become the Indian captain by winning the most toss in Test cricket. As captain, Kohli has now won 30 tosses for India in 68 Tests and before the Boxing Day clash, he won the toss to lead his team to 23 victories. Azharuddin won the toss 29 times in 47 Tests as the captain of India.

Kohli sought a historic away Test series win in South Africa, saying past history on the field persuaded him to bat.

“The wicket is looking good. There’s a lot of grass on it but historically it gets faster from day two,” Kohli said at the toss

Kohli said he traced India’s recent success to the series after their victory in the third Test in Johannesburg four seasons ago, when they lost the first two matches.

“It gave us a lot of confidence,” he said.

But he admitted: “It’s a very challenging place to play cricket. We have to do our best.”

Talking about the composition of the playing XI, Kohli said, “We are playing with Siraj, Shami and Bumrah, all-rounder is Shardul and spinner is Ashwin.”

Meanwhile, openers Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul gave India a strong start by winning the toss of skipper Kohli. The talented opening pair batted with a lot of grit and determination to take India to the top in the first session. At lunch, India were 83/0 between Mayank (46) and Rahul (29).
