IND vs SA: KL Rahul indulges in heat exchange with South Africa captain Dean Elgar – WATCH

Team India’s stand-in captain KL Rahul was involved in a heated verbal duel with South Africa captain Dean Elgar after he was dismissed earlier by Marco Jensen in the seventh over of the second innings of the second day at Johannesburg. Batting for eight, India’s stand-in captain made it to second slip, where Aiden Markram leaped forward to take the catch.

Rahul was not ready to leave the field until the on-field umpire took the matter to the third umpire. Replays showed that the ball was in the hands of Markram, who convinced the third umpire to rule in favor of the hosts.

Rahul was returning to the pavilion when he felt that he had heard what was said by the South African players. The opener appeared annoyed by what he heard and responded to the hosts, as well as provoked Elgar’s reaction. The dispute went on for some time before Rahul left for the pavilion.

Earlier in the day, just moments before lunch, South African batsman Rassie van der Dussen was similarly declared caught out by the on-field umpire. Doubts were raised on the validity of the catch of wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant. However, there was no convincing evidence that the ball had bounced before landing in the wicket-keeping gloves.

After delivering his first blow in the form of Rahul during the last session of Day 2, the visitors lost Mayank Agarwal for 23 runs. However, the experienced pair of Cheteshwar Pujara (35*) and Ajinkya Rahane (11*) stitched an unbroken partnership of 41 runs to finish the day at 85/2, allowing India to take a crucial 58-run lead.

Rahul was entrusted with the responsibility of leading India in the second Test against South Africa in Johannesburg. The opener was named captain after regular skipper Virat Kohli was ruled out due to an upper back spasm. He has also been appointed as the captain for the three-match ODI series.
