South Africa beat India by seven wickets to win the three-match series 2-1. India were the clear favorites to lift the series 3-0, especially after beating South Africa in the first Test at Centurion. South Africa continued to lead India to 171/3 by the time they took lunch on the fourth day of the third Test in Cape Town. India found success when Shardul Thakur dismissed the dangerous Keegan Pietersen (82), but it was too late. By this time Pietersen and Rassi VD Doosan had put on a fifty-plus partnership for the third wicket, leaving India almost out of the game.

Earlier South Africa resumed with a total of 101/2, and reached 150/2 after surviving some very good deliveries from the likes of Jasprit Bumrah. The stand continued to frustrate India as the new man vs Doosan resolved itself with ease. Meanwhile, senior partner Pietersen continued to punish anything less than his brilliant back-foot game. It was much later that Thakur got one through his defense that India got the breakthrough with a score of 155/3. Pietersen batted really well as he escaped the opening struggle, hitting good deliveries outside the off-stump. However, he took advantage of his chances against bad deliveries and came out on top every time, timing the ball perfectly.
South Africa needed a little more than 50 runs to retain seven wickets. This game is for South Africa to lose. Earlier, India skipper Virat Kohli and his teammates lost their cool during the final 45 minutes on the third day when rival skipper Dean Elgar was largely relieved by a controversial DRS decision.
After the lunch break, India conceded defeat when Kohli did not bowl a single ball to Jasprit Bumrah or Mogamed Shami. Ashwin and Umesh kept on working as South Africa ran away from the game. Pietersen was adjudged man of the match for his 82 runs.
