Captain Ajinkya Rahane was then joined by debutant Shreyas Iyer as the pair tried to stabilize the innings. The pair found some success, adding 39 runs for the fourth wicket, before Jamieson pulled Rahane back to the stumps to send him back for 35.

Shreyas starts playing an aerial shot to hit the target with the pair, but settles down in the end. He is batting on 17 off 55 with two fours with Ravindra Jadeja on 6 off 13.

The wickets meant that India’s batsmen were kept under control by the Kiwi bowlers.

Earlier, Gill led the recovery after losing cheaply to India opener Mayank Agarwal (13) with a scintillating half-century at the Green Park Stadium. He added 61 runs for the second wicket before departing together with Pujara.

Gill was spared a chance in the third over as Tim Southee made him lbw, but the right-hander had to reverse the decision as the replays showed a huge inside edge. Jamieson, who constantly checks the off-stump channel, took his first wicket on Indian soil in the eighth over by dismissing Agarwal (13) at the hands of keeper Tom Blundell.

After Agarwal’s downfall, Gill saw Southee and Jamieson go through tough times. His luck was on six to avoid being dismissed lbw in the first over by Ejaz Patel. From there, Gill smashed Patel for four boundaries and assured the left-arm spinner to hit a straight six.

Pujara, on the other hand, kept playing the second fiddle looking at an impressive Gill attack from the other end. It looked like he had settled down too, but a late walk from Southee gave the keeper the lead.
