IND vs ENG: ‘We didn’t bat well’, admits captain Rohit Sharma after defeat in 2nd ODI

crew India Captain Rohit Sharma conceded that 247 was a achievable target in the second ODI but his batsmen did not live up to the expectations as England registered a 100-run win to level the three-match series 1-1. It was a disappointing performance from India’s bat as they were bundled out for just 146 in reply to England’s 246.

India lost their top four batsmen for just 31 runs while two of them captain Rohit and Rishabh Pant could not open the account.

Rohit said that India started the game well as they were in control of the ball and restricted England to 246 runs, but the batsmen failed to do the job.

“We bowled very well in the beginning. He partnered with Moeen and Willie in between. By no means could the target be chased but we didn’t bat well,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.

The captain further explained that David Willey’s drop catch cost India as the southpaw scored 40 runs. It was the famous Krishna who dropped Willie’s catch. Moeen Ali and Willie led England’s fight as the duo put on a crucial 62-run partnership for the seventh wicket to help them post a respectable total.

“The catch is to take, something we’ve been talking about a lot. Overall we bowled well. Shocked me (pitch). I thought the pitch would get better and better.” He added.

Rohit said one of the top-order batsmen has to play big innings when the team combination includes five bowlers and one all-rounder.

“Playing against such a team, you need to bring your five best bowlers and all-rounders. Leaves a long tail. So the top-order form has to make sure that one of the players bats for a long time,” he said.

With parity restored in the three-match series, Sunday’s decider at Old Trafford in Manchester promises to be mouth-watering.

While Rohit said that the team will have to adapt to the conditions in Manchester for the series decider.

“There’s going to be an exciting one (in Manchester). Let’s see what we have to do to do better. The conditions there have to be seen and adapted,” he concluded.
