England’s team was a huge target of 368 runs at ‘The Oval’ and the team was bundled out for 210 runs in 92.2 overs. England got off to a good start with openers Haseeb Hameed (62) and Rory Burns (50) adding 100 runs for the first wicket but the Indian bowlers dominated after the pair broke up. Apart from these two, only in-form captain Joe Root (36) was able to cross the 20-run mark.
India made a strong comeback after being bowled out for 191 in the first innings. England took a 99-run lead after scoring 290 runs in the first innings. India then made a big score of 466 runs in the second innings.
England scored 54 for two in 27 overs in the morning session while India almost ensured victory in the second session by taking six wickets for 62 runs in 25.1 overs. Jadeja got India off to a great start in the second session when he bowled Hameed in the third over of the session itself. Hameed did not make much effort to play the ball pitched on the leg-stump, which uprooted his off-stump while taking a turn. Hameed hit six fours in his 193-ball innings. Bumrah then bowled Ollie Pope (02) on a fast coming ball and in his next over Jonny Bairstow (00) also bowled a yorker. In the next over, Jadeja caught Moeen Ali (0) at short leg at the hands of substitute Suryak Mar Yadav to make England 147 for six from 141 for two.
Root and Chris Woakes then did not allow the Indian bowlers to achieve success for more than 12 overs. Kohli decided not to take the new ball after 80 overs and handed the old ball to Thakur. Returning to the spell, only the first ball of Thakur was played on the Root wicket. Root scored 36 runs in 78 balls with the help of three fours.
Ajinkya Rahane dropped an overton catch off Bumrah but Umesh returned the spell for the last over before tea and Woakes (18) was caught by Lokesh Rahul at short midwicket on the very first ball. In the final session, Umesh bowled Overton (10). Umesh then ensured India’s victory by getting James Anderson (02) caught by Pant.
