India’s premier fast bowler went all guns blazing with the ball against England’s batting line-up. Bumrah took advantage of the rainy conditions to create doubts in the minds of the England batsmen and took six wickets. He became the first Indian fast bowler to take six wickets in ODIs on England soil. While it was also the best bowling performance by an Indian against England. Bumrah got off to a start in his first over as he dismissed out-of-form Jason Roy for a duck. Whereas in Test run-machine- Joe Root also became his victim in the same over. Mohammed Shami once again proved his mettle in the ODI format as he took three wickets to provide big support to Bumrah with the new ball. Shami has become the fastest Indian bowler to take 150 wickets in ODIs. It took him 80 ODIs to reach his 150th position in the format, surpassing the previous Indian record held by Ajit Agarkar, who did so in 97 matches. While overall he is the joint third fastest with Rashid Khan, Mitchell Starc is on top by claiming 150 wickets in 77 matches.

Captain Rohit won the toss and decided to bowl against England as he mentioned that he did his best in stormy conditions and their pace bowlers didn’t let him down at all. The pace pairing of Shami and Bumrah was too good for the England batsman who looked unprepared to challenge him. Jos Buttler was the only man who looked a bit comfortable against the Indian fast bowlers when he was in the middle of his 32 deliveries.

Rohit Sharma shines with words

The Indian captain returned to form with a half-century in the first match of the series. After a tremendous IPL season and T20I series against England, Rohit was under the pump but the flamboyant opener displayed his quality in the first ODI to help India register a massive 10-wicket win. He shared a solid 114-run partnership with Shikhar Dhawan for the opening wicket. However, this partnership was dominated by Rohit who hit 5 sixes and 6 fours during his innings of 76 runs.

Clueless England Bowling Attack

England had a disappointing day with both bat and ball, although the batting department is not a concern for them as it was just a day off. But that was not the case with bowling as they completely missed the services of Jofra Archer, Mark Wood and Adil Rashid in the white-ball competition. The England bowlers failed to pose any threat to the Indian openers at the Oval. He tried to attack Rohit with short deliveries, but the flamboyant opener, with his poor timing while playing hook and pull shots, took him to the boundary quite comfortably.
