Usman Khawaja hit a 264-ball century to put Australia in the driving seat at stumps on Day 1 of the fourth Test against India

Usman Khawaja’s century put Australia in the driving seat at stumps on Day 1 of the ongoing fourth Test against India. Narendra Modi Stadium on March 9, Thursday.

Khawaja returned unbeaten on 104, helping Australia post a total of 255/4, with Cameron Green also impressive with his 49 not out.

It was quite an occasion on the first day as the Prime Ministers of both India and Australia, Narendra Modi as well as Anthony Albanese arrived at the venue for the series decider.

The two prime ministers were earlier felicitated by the BCCI before they mounted a special chariot and paraded around the Narendra Modi Stadium to the applause of the crowd.

Later, they both went on the field with captain Rohit Sharma and Steve Smith and stood with their respective teams as the national anthem was played.

Meanwhile, Smith had elected to bat after winning the toss and his openers Travis Head and Usman played with a cautious approach. They put on an opening partnership of 61 and looked to be walking away from the contest when Ravichandran Ashwin got India the crucial breakthrough.

Ashwin dismissed Head for 32 and soon after, Mohammed Shami joined the party. The experienced pacer picked up two wickets, the first of which was the crucial breakthrough when he got rid of Marnus Labuschagne at 3.

Smith was joined by Khawaja and their pair took Australia to 75/2 at lunch and after the break, they put on a show against the Indian bowlers.

For the first time in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy 2023, not a single wicket fell during the second session as Smith and Khawaja’s resilience helped the visitors post a total of 149/2 on the tea scoreboard.

The third session was always going to be crucial with the hosts dominating the first session while the second session went in Australia’s favour.

Rohit’s men started the season well and Jadeja got the crucial breakthrough by dismissing Smith for 38.

Shami then got his second wicket of the day when he removed Handscomb for 17. Once Green joined Khawaja in the middle, the two of them frustrated the Indian bowlers until the end of the day’s play.

The Australian opener brought up his century in the final over before stumps, thus ensuring that Australia finished the action in cruise control as they had begun.
