Mitchell Starc broke the back of the much-anticipated Indian batting line-up and finished with figures of 5/53 in eight overs

India found themselves bowled out for 117 in just 26 overs at the end of some quick bowling from Australian duo of Mitchell Starc and Sean Abbott in the second ODI of the three-match series in Visakhapatnam on Sunday.

Starc broke the back of the much-anticipated Indian batting line-up by scalping the wickets of Shubman Gill, Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav and KL Rahul in quick succession to leave India struggling at 48/4 in the ninth over. Left-arm pacer Mohammad Siraj achieved a well-deserved fifty to wrap up the Indian innings. He ended with figures of 5/53 from eight overs. It was Starc’s ninth fifty in ODIs, with only Waqar Younis and Muttiah Muralitharan ahead of him.

Starc was well supported by Abbott, who recorded figures of 3/23 from six overs. Abbott’s wickets also included the wicket of Hardik Pandya, who was brilliantly caught in the slips by stand-in captain Steve Smith.

So, it was a fine performance with the ball and in the field that has now put Australia in the driver’s seat to go on for the win and level the series.

An Australian win here would mean everything to play for in the third and final match of the series in Chennai on March 22. That the team is facing defeat. He took his anger out on Twitter and some patted Sanju Samson on the back of Surya Kumar Yadav for his low score.

Yadav fell to Starc twice in a row and on the same score of zero. The manner of his dismissal in Visakhapatnam was also the same as in Mumbai. On both occasions, Yadav, who is often compared to South African maestro AB de Villiers, failed to judge the line and length of Starc’s deliveries, given his ability to play shots around the wicket and in front of the stumps. Fell down Yadav’s last ODI half-century came against the West Indies in Ahmedabad a year and 15 innings ago.

Twitter users were impressed by Stark’s performance and praised him fiercely. He was also reminded of Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rishabh Pant, who could have saved India from a batting disaster. Former cricketer and commentator Laxman Sivaramakrishnan was also reacting to a post by fellow commentator Harsha Bhogle and pointing out a technical flaw in Indian batting, wherein batsmen position their heads outside the off-stump and cover the inswinging ball. Didn’t, as he got out LBW. Kohli, Yadav and Rahul were out LBW.

Here are some of the reactions on social media:

This was India’s third lowest ODI total against Australia and the lowest total against Australians at home. This is India’s fourth lowest ODI total at home.

India were hoping for a miraculous bowling effort from Mohammed Shami & Co. to bail them out of this crisis but in the end, Mitchell Marsh (66 not out from 36 balls) and Travis Head (51 not out from 30 balls) I could not do this. The Indian bowlers were thrashed and achieved the target in just 11 overs, bringing an unusually quick end to the proceedings.
