Gandhi demanded a substantial increase in sugarcane prices, bonus on wheat and paddy, doubling of the amount of Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi (PM-Kisan) scheme and subsidy on diesel.

He suggested increasing the selling price of sugarcane to Rs 400 per quintal, which is currently Rs 315 per quintal in Uttar Pradesh.

Stating that farmers should be given an additional bonus of Rs 200 per quintal over the Minimum Support Price (MSP) of wheat and paddy, Gandhi also demanded that the PM Kisan scheme be doubled for farmers to Rs 12,000 with the state government. should be done annually. The letter to the Uttar Pradesh chief minister comes after Gandhi said the government should re-engage with farmers to access common land as they are “our own flesh and blood”.

He expressed his views on Twitter when earlier on September 5, a large number of farmers had gathered in Muzaffarnagar for a mahapanchayat organized by the United Kisan Morcha against the three agricultural laws.

“Lakhs of farmers have gathered in Muzaffarnagar today in protest. They are our own flesh and blood. We need to start reconnecting with them in a respectful way: understand their pain, their point of view and work with them to reach common ground,” he tweeted and posted a video of large crowds in attendance.

Farmers mostly from Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh have been demanding since November last year that the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 should be withdrawn and a new law should be made to guarantee the minimum support price for crops.
