Congress sources say that this instruction has come from Priyanka herself. She, like some others like her brother Rahul Gandhi, believes that derogatory or adverse personal comments against the PM only benefit the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections.
Till Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s aggressive outbreak Against Prime Minister Narendra Modi at a rally in Karnataka’s Jamkhandi, the Congress was concerned about any personal attacks made against the PM. This is the reason that after the uproar over the statement of Congress President Mallikarjun KhargePoisonous snakeremarks, he clarified that his remarks were not directed at an individual but at an ideology. He later said he was sorry if he had hurt anyone.
But now Priyanka’s tone has changed. Soon after his outburst, the social media team of the Congress took a dig at the Prime Minister, calling him CryPM, while Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai was dubbed PayCM. The hashtag and campaign soon trended, revealing the Congress’ new strategy: “Give it back”.
Congress sources say that this instruction has come from Priyanka herself. She, like some others like her brother Rahul Gandhi, believes that derogatory or adverse personal comments against the PM only benefit the BJP during the Lok Sabha elections. “Chowkidar Chor Hai”, “Chai Wala”, etc. helped the saffron party garner support for the PM during parliamentary elections. The Congress believes that local issues matter more in state elections. And since state elections are about the chief minister, any attack on the PM doesn’t count.
According to sources, Priyanka also told her party colleagues that the strategy may be different for the Lok Sabha polls, but she need not worry about it in the state polls.
“People are angry about many things. We have to be open to questioning and criticizing the PM. I don’t think it will reverse at the national level now. But when we don’t want to take any chances in Karnataka for 2024, it doesn’t really matter,” said a Congress leader.
Actually, Priyanka and Rahul have made up their mind that this new Congress does not need to apologise. He said that if the BJP can attack Sonia Gandhi and survive, there is no reason why the Congress cannot attack the PM as well.
However, these views have not been fully accepted by most local leaders. They feel that at a time when the focus should be on rising prices, unemployment and corruption, any such comment can only help the BJP in diverting public attention.
The Congress is expected to become more sharp and aggressive in the next few days. Indeed, through the Karnataka campaign, the Gandhi family has made up its mind for a 2024 strategy, which is to “take them, especially the PM”.
