Two minors allegedly in love with each other allegedly committed suicide after jumping into a well in Rajasthan’s Dungarpur on Tuesday. Police said the duo took the step after their parents did not allow them to get married.
According to Rajasthan Police, bodies of minors were recovered from a well located on the outskirts of a village under Bichhiwada police station area.
Bichhiwada police station in-charge Ranjit Singh told the media that the body was first seen by the shepherds. “The shepherd informed the villagers and the village head about the bodies floating in the well. Villagers informed us about the incident,” said Singh.
“A team was sent to the spot to investigate the incident. A school bag, suicide note and a bottle containing poison were recovered from near the well.
Singh further said that during the investigation he came to know that both the deceased were minors. “The boy was about 17 years old and the girl was 14 years old,” Singh said.
Another officer posted at Bichhiwada police station said that with the help of villagers, the bodies were taken out from the well and sent to Dungarpur District Government Hospital for postmortem.
“We suspect that the minor couple had consumed poison before jumping into the well. The cause of death will be clear only after the post-mortem,” the official said.
The officer further said that the bodies of both were tied to each other with a dupatta. “In the suicide note, both had asked their relatives to perform the last rites in the same pyre,” the officer said.
The officer further told the media that during investigation they came to know that the minors were in love with each other and wanted to get married but their parents were against it.
However, a senior police officer posted at Dungarpur district police headquarters told the media that they have directed the Bichhiwara police station to investigate the matter from all angles, including the honor killings.
