Cities accounted for 61 per cent of cases during the second wave and 76 per cent in the third wave – indicating that the cases in the third wave were more concentrated in the cities,” said an epidemiologist.

34% drop in new covid cases in a single day in the city
The end of January marked the likely end of a third wave for the city – 2,350 cases were reported in the city in 24 hours, 34% less than the 3,582 reported on Sunday. Within 11 days, daily cases have dropped by a quarter from 9,837 on January 20.
Analysis of the test positivity rate (TPR) shows that the city’s TPR stood at 17.5% on Monday, which was half of 37% on January 20. In comparison, the state’s TPR on Monday was 7.2% or less than half of the city’s.
An epidemiologist in the city said, “Even today, the city accounts for a third of the state’s total cases. Once the cases in the city start coming down, it is possible that the daily cases may soon go down to 2,500.” “However, the coming wedding season will decide the course of the pandemic. It is likely that the cases may increase slightly, but it is unlikely that we may see the same spike after Uttarayan, when the daily cases crossed 20,000 Were.”
With the death of six patients, Ahmedabad accounted for 101 of the state’s 355 Covid fatalities in January, or 28.5% of the total deaths. Experts said the profile of the deceased hasn’t changed much in the past few days – the patients spent some time in the ICU or ventilator and were mainly above 50 years of age, had multiple comorbidities and had no Covid records. .
Gujarat on Monday started giving the second dose of COVID vaccine to people in the age group of 15-18 years and 64,488 doses were administered on the first day. So far 26.93 lakh adolescent girls have received the first dose in the state, whereas the target was 35 lakh. In all, Gujarat has given 9.79 crore vaccination doses so far.
