We commonly buy bandages made from cotton and adhesives to find relief from small wounds. Have you ever heard of bandages made from silk? Local18 reports about an Institution in West Bengal, which has patented silk cocoon bandages. A cotton bandage is extremely useful in controlling bleeding wounds, reduces swelling and prevents infection. The researchers of the Raiganj University have developed bandages made from silk cocoon. According to them, the bandages are very good for patients who have suffered burns, and can dry the wounds fast. They further claim that it can also reduce the death rates of such patients. Talking to Local18, the researchers added that the bandages are developed with five layers of silver nanoparticles, which was acquired from the cocoon silk. Now, they also have a patent based on its uses and application.

The bandages which are commonly available and are used extensively can take around 18 to 21 days to dry the burn wounds. If the silk bandages are used for the same, it only takes around 10 days for the wounds to get better, claim the researchers. As per the information given, around 7 million people suffer from burns in our country, while 1,50,000 of the victims end up dying due to it. The cases are more commonly reported from rural areas, instead of the urban. So, this invention could prove to be very groundbreaking in the field of medicine.

According to several websites, silk can be used to treat a number of wounds apart from burns, which include full-thickness wounds and diabetic wounds. More information states that it is good for delivering growth factors, bioactive agents and even drugs. It promotes wound healing through accelerated cell growth. It can also be used to avoid painful dressing changes, as per the given information.
