New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday laid the foundation stone of Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh State University in Aligarh. During the program, the PM was accompanied by UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.

PM Modi also visited the exhibition model of Aligarh node of Uttar Pradesh Defense Industrial Corridor.

With the event in Aligarh, PM Modi formally launched the UP election campaign for the BJP.

The state government has established the university in the memory and honor of freedom fighter, educationist and social reformer Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh.

The university is being set up in an area spread over 92 acres in the villages of Lodha and Musepur Karim Jarauli in Kol Tehsil of Aligarh. The PMO said that it will provide affiliation to 395 colleges of Aligarh division.

Who was Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh?

Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh was an alumnus of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) and also the chairman of India’s first provisional government-in-exile, established in Kabul on December 1, 1915.

Belonging to the royal family of Mursan, he left his home and family in Aligarh in December 1914 and fled to Germany and lived in exile for almost 33 years as he was wanted by the British authorities.

He returned in 1947 only after India got independence. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from Mathura in 1957, contesting as an independent by defeating the then Jana Sangh candidate Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Eminent scholar and political historian Professor Shan Mohammed was quoted by PTI as saying, “Raja Mahendra Pratap is one of the most remarkable figures of India’s independence movement and his commitment to a secular democratic India marks him as a hero of his time. Is.” .
