In a first, IITs will hire quota-based faculty. India News – Times of India

Mumbai: For the first time since its inception, IITs have advertised for quota based recruitment of faculty members. The recruitment process, for which IITs had autonomy, has been changed at the behest of the Center and new deadlines have been set.
Since 2019, the Ministry of Education (then called the Ministry of Human Resource Development) has been pushing centrally funded higher education institutions to implement the reservation policy in recruitment. This time, IIT has deferred the ministry. Advertisement out for recruitment SC/ST/OBC/EWS Faculty member in all institutes including IITs.
A letter issued by the Ministry of Education in late August stressed that reservation rules must be followed and vacancies “specifically” scheduled caste, scheduled tribe and Other Backward Classes” can be filled up to September 4, 2022. IITs follow a one year rolling recruitment process and before that no time limit has been prescribed by the ministry.
IITs should be exempted from reservation: Panel
The deadline creates difficulties due to the paucity of engineering doctoral candidates, especially from the SC/ST/OBC categories – a PhD is the minimum eligibility criteria. Usually in a year, IITs in metros employ around 35 faculty members, 40 in a good year. “It would be impossible to fill hundreds of vacancies,” said a director. While some institutes have advertised vacancies for several specific positions, others have listed all departments where at least one post is vacant.
“each IIT Have followed your procedure. We are all recruiting under mission mode. But where IIT Bombay has advertised for 50 posts, IIT Madras has advertised for 49. Others like IIT Delhi, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Kharagpur Listed the departments where there are vacancies,” said a dean (faculty). All advertisements encourage women from disadvantaged backgrounds to apply as well.
In June 2020, a committee set up to suggest implementation of reservation in central educational institutions had said that IITs are institutions of national importance and should be exempted from reservation. It said the matter of reservation be left to the boards of each IIT and if quota in hiring is to be implemented, then the posts of professor and assistant professor be relaxed. However, that report is gathering dust.
