A Delhi court acquitted Sharjeel Imam, Safoora Zargar and other student activists in the violence during anti-CAA protests in December 2019.

Here is the sequence of events in the Jamia Nagar violence case in which 11 people, including student activists Sharjeel Imam and Asif Iqbal Tanha, were on Saturday discharged by a Delhi court.

December 2019: Police registers FIR. Violence broke out in Delhi’s Jamia Nagar on 13 December.

April 21, 2020: Filing of charge sheet along with supplementary charge sheet against Mohd Ilyas.

January 12, 2021: A second supplementary charge sheet was filed against 11 accused – Sharjeel Imam, Asif Iqbal Tanha, Safoora Zargar, Mohd Qasim, Mehmood Anwar, Shahzar Raza Khan, Mohd Abuzar, Mohd Shoaib, Umair Ahmed, Bilal Nadeem and Chanda Yadav.

February 1, 2023: While the arguments on the charge continued, the police filed a third supplementary charge sheet to establish that the witnesses had identified the accused on the basis of photographs.

February 4, 2023: The court acquitted all the accused except Mohammad Ilyas.

April 10, 2023: The court will decide the charges against Ilyas
