Impromptu Meals, Village Outreach & Star Power: BJP, TMC Push the Pedal for 2023 Panchayat Polls

The BJP and the Trinamool Congress are set to battle it out for next year’s panchayat elections, with both parties trying to maximize their public outreach.

Chief Minister of Bengal Mamata Banerjee Has started holding administrative meetings in the districts to meet his supporters. On 30 November, he visited the remote areas of Sunderbans-Hasanabad where he rowed for some time. When a villager requested Banerjee to have a meal with him, the Chief Minister gladly agreed.

TMC insiders say that Banerjee is known for her public connect and this December she will try to reach out to her rural supporters.

The chief minister has also strengthened the government’s ‘duare sarkar’ (government at your doorstep) program to ensure redressal of public grievances, though the BJP is confident that people will no longer listen to Banerjee.

Senior TMC leaders have been given the responsibility to reach the villages, sources say that Abhishek Banerjee will visit the villages and hold public meetings.

Abhishek Banerjee will hold a public rally on December 3 in Kanthi, the home constituency of BJP leader Shubhendu Adhikari in East Medinipur. Senior Trinamool leaders are also camping in East Medinipur as party insiders say TMC wants the best results from the region.

Meanwhile, officials have reached the court saying that Abhishek Banerjee’s meeting has been organized to harass his family.

The BJP, on the other hand, has started its panchayat campaign with actor-turned-politician Mithun Chakraborty reaching out to supporters on behalf of the party.

When Abhishek Banerjee lands on his home ground on December 3, officials will hold a series of meetings to chalk out a panchayat strategy, besides holding meetings in his rival’s area in South 24 Parganas.

In 2018, the panchayat elections took a violent turn and a large number of seats went to the polls uncontested. BJP got the benefit of this and it got 18 seats in the Lok Sabha. Therefore, this time TMC and BJP are leaving no stone unturned to win the important elections.
