A meeting of the United Kisan Morcha (SKM) has been called in Delhi on Monday, March 14. The leaders associated with the front say that a decision can be taken after discussing which movement to start again in this. Although after the assembly elections in Punjab and UP, about a dozen farmer organizations associated with SKM are now seen to be away from the struggle, while BKU national spokesperson Rakesh Tikait has said that they are with the SKM. All eyes are now on the Delhi meeting.

Looking at the discussions going on in the media regarding the proposed meeting of United Kisan Morcha in Delhi on Monday, it is being said that the SKM can take a decision on starting the farmers’ movement again. During the suspension of the movement, the talks with the central government on many issues have also not come to fruition. Neither there has been any discussion on MSP nor have all the cases registered against the farmers been withdrawn. Many other issues are still hanging in the balance. These are to be discussed in detail in today’s meeting.

11 organizations withdrew

There is also a split in SKM. After the Punjab assembly elections, 11 organizations abstained from the meeting of farmers’ organizations in Mullanpur Dakha. A message was sent to all 32 organizations to reach the meeting. Out of this, leaders of 18 organizations were present in the meeting. The three organizations gave their consent over the phone. In the meeting that lasted for three to four hours, there was a tremendous uproar and the farmer leaders kept fighting verbally on many issues. The preparation, review and agenda of the national level meeting of SKM in Delhi on 14 March were discussed in the meeting.

still with tikat

On the other hand, BKU leader Rakesh Tikait said on Sunday that whatever party is in power, our agitation will continue till our demands are met. I don’t want to talk about UP elections. Everything is over, but the 100% movement will continue. I am with SKM. However, SKM now has a tough challenge ahead. A member of the organisation’s decision-making panel said the farmers’ goals were not just about one election, though the Kisan Morcha campaigned widely to defeat the BJP in Uttar Pradesh.

These agendas were discussed in the meeting

Many agendas will be discussed in the SKM meeting to be held in Delhi on March 14. It is being said that a new outline of the national level struggle will be decided in the meeting. Farmers leader Balbir Singh Rajewal, Kamalpreet Singh Pannu of Kisan Sangharsh Committee Punjab, Furman Singh of BKU Punjab, Kulwant Singh Sandhu of Jamhoori Kisan Sabha etc. say that after getting bail to Ashish Mishra of Lakhimpur Khiri incident, the lives of the victims’ families and witnesses. The danger has increased but the government is waiting for another Lakhimpur-like incident as a mute spectator.

Government’s silence on farmers’ demands

The central government, of course, withdrew three agricultural laws, but the government seems to be backing down on all other promises. Be it the matter of MSP or loan waiver of farmers, the government seems to be reneging on all the promises. Cases filed against farmers on the borders of Delhi and Delhi are also not being withdrawn. Compensation is not being given for the soft crop damaged due to bad weather. The farmers could not get the amount of increase of Rs 35 per quintal in sugarcane crop so far. The issue of BBMB will also be raised in this meeting.
