IIT-Madras Student Dies By Suicide, Third Case At The Institute This Year

Velachery: A PhD student of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras committed suicide in his room in Tamil Nadu’s Velachery – the third incident of suicide recorded at IIT Madras this year. “On March 31, the deceased student posted a WhatsApp status ‘I’m sorry, not good enough.’ Seeing the situation, his friends reached his house and found Sachin hanging in his room. An ambulance was immediately called to take him to the hospital, where he was declared brought dead. Further investigation is on,” police said.

According to the police, the deceased student (32) was a resident of West Bengal. This is the third incident of suicide at the prestigious institute of technology and the 11th since 2018. Police took the body into custody and sent it to Royapettah Government Hospital for postmortem.

IIT Madras condoles the death

IIT Madras has issued a statement condoling his death. “We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of a PhD Research Scholar from the Department of Mechanical Engineering at his residence in Velachery, Chennai on the afternoon of March 31, 2023. A great loss to the student with an exemplary academic and research record in the research community,” IIT said.

“The Institute expresses its heartfelt condolences and shares the grief of the friends and family of the deceased student. The institute requests all to respect the privacy of the student’s family during this difficult time. May the departed soul rest in peace.”

Earlier on March 14, a third year BTech student had committed suicide by hanging himself at the Madras IIT campus. The deceased has been identified as Vaipu Pushpak Sri Sai (20), a resident of Andhra Pradesh. Kotturpuram police have registered a case on the matter and further investigation is underway.

While on February 14, a research scholar from Maharashtra hanged himself in a room inside the IIT campus.
