IIT Kanpur-incubated company develops automatic composting machine

Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur Incubated company – Agnis Waste Management Pvt Ltd has developed an automatic composting machine known as Bhumi, for bio-composting of horticultural and organic waste indigenously into compost. The device is equipped with advanced facilities like carbon filter, shredder, air pump, solar panels, which systematically convert waste into compost in 10-20 days. This process is more convenient and faster than traditional techniques.

The device follows a step-wise simplified process where first the organic waste goes through the hopper and the inbuilt shredder shreds it into small and uniform pieces. The finely shredded waste then enters the main part of the machine which contains a unique bacterial solution to start the composting process.

A mixer and air pump are installed inside to increase its speed so that composting can be done faster. Temperature and humidity sensors are also installed to regularly measure the day to day process. After the temperature has stabilized, the compost can be collected for use.

“Proper waste management has always been a very relevant and important issue, especially in urban areas. This has direct implications for the ever-increasing concern for climate change. At IIT Kanpur, we work for sustainability and other key areas of environmental protection. This is a major step in this regard and I congratulate the entire team for developing the land. I believe this device will be a boon for the treatment of organic waste and Swachh Bharat The campaign and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative will make a significant contribution,” said Prof Abhay Karandikar, Director, IIT Kanpur.

Decentralized composting equipment can be easily installed in any bulk waste generator like apartment, hotel, hostel, institute etc. It is easy to operate and can be very suitable in reducing organic waste and contributing to the concept of smart cities. The advanced features of the product such as carbon filter, shredder, air pump, solar panels, make it more efficient than the products currently available in the market. The efficient and cost-effective design makes it 20-30 per cent cheaper than the rest, the institute said.
