The Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad has come under controversy over the management’s decision to change its historic logo. The move has been strongly criticized by faculty members and the academic board, with over 40 faculty members writing to the management opposing the move.

The apex governing body of the apex institute has decided to replace the existing logo with two new ones: one for domestic use, and one for international.

The current logo, adopted in 1961, includes a Sanskrit poem, ‘Vidya Vinyogadvikas’, which means development through the distribution or application of knowledge. The new logo retains the impression of a mosque grill, however, it is less prominent. Whereas the Sanskrit shloka is only in the international people.

Amidst all the reactions, IIM-A in a statement on Thursday said, “The Institute has felt the need to refresh the logo in the process of revamping its website. Evaluation, exploration, development of wordmark, development of brandmark all are taken into consideration.” placed. while coming up with the final design recommendations.”

“The proposed logo continues the legacy of the original logo, retaining the status line in Sanskrit (Vidyaviniyogad Vikas) as the original, improved color rendering, modernized fonts, brand inspired by ‘Jali’ The mark has been made more modifiable. Communication in digital media, and the brand name made more distinctive. The proposed logo is to be released after the annual holiday in June this year,” the statement read.

However, on a closer look at the full details of the Academic Council meeting, there is no consensus between the IIM Institute and its Academic Council members regarding the change of logo. Opposing the decision to change the logo, 48 professors have written to the board of directors requesting it to be withdrawn.

Criticizing the move, former IIMA director Bakul Dholakia asked how the decision could have been considered when there was no attention from the academic council. He said the move “defyes logic and logic” and would lead to weakening of IIM-A’s strong brand.
