Ravichandran Ashwin suggested that the ‘buzzball’ approach would falter on certain types of wickets.

experienced person India Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has said that England’s new method of Test cricket ‘buzzball’ can falter if the conditions don’t suit the batsmen. England have been playing dominant cricket in red-ball cricket since Brendon McCullum took over the coaching duties and Ben Stokes as Test captain. The two have complemented each other well as the ultra-aggressive approach with the bat has worked well for the English team.

Ashwin talked about the ‘buzzball’ approach in his latest YouTube video where he suggested that it will fumble in certain types of wickets.

He said, ‘You cannot hit fast like in T20. Second, we now have a concept called baseball. England is playing fast paced Test match cricket.

“They want to play a certain style of cricket. But in certain types of wickets, when you try to attack every ball, you falter. This approach has both advantages and disadvantages. Sometimes the conditions on the wicket need to be respected.

Meanwhile, things are working out pretty well for England so far with his approach as they have lost just one Test since McCullum was appointed as the Test coach.

The veteran spinner said that it is important for everyone to respect the pitch to be successful as an attacking approach may not work if the conditions favor the bowlers.

“Some would ask instead of defending and getting all out on 100, I would rather hit it hard and get all out on 140. We’ll only know when the game is over whether the approach worked. Sometimes the conditions on the wicket have to be respected. If you respect the pitch and play accordingly, the pitch will respect you. If you respect the pitch, you will get the benefit of it.

The 36-year-old also recalled his former coach WV Raman’s advice on respecting situations.

“WV Raman used to say to me, ‘Hello, Mr. Don’t challenge the circumstances. Will you go to the beach and start swimming like you do in the swimming pool? You can’t, can you? Similarly, if you must respect the pitch and play according to it, then the pitch will also respect you.”
