The bombardment of calls and messages by mobile users in India has clearly warned that the SIM card in their phone will be blocked in a few hours due to lack of KYC documents. Even the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI) has issued a stern statement in an effort to warn users that these calls are fake and not official communication by any mobile service provider, including Airtel, Reliance Jio Or we. These scam calls also urge unsuspecting users to download third party apps on their phones to upload identity documents such as Aadhaar Or complete the PAN card and KYC process, which is a complete fraud – you should neither download any such app nor share any ID document with unknown callers.
• COAI says, “It has been brought to our notice that mischievous elements are sending fake SMS and calling people and threatening to block the SIM card. Messages and calls falsely claim that customer’s KYC documents are incomplete, pending or expired. If you are a mobile service user in India, you will probably want to read on. It is easy to fall for such scams, but there are always red flags that you can notice right away.
• Regular warnings by mobile service providers that no random calls for KYC documents should be entertained and any suggestion to download a third party app on your phone is best rejected . COAI also says, “Recipients of such messages are falsely advised to call a particular number or download an app on their phone. If false instructions are followed, it could potentially lead to privacy breach or cause financial or data loss.” Most of the time, mobile service providers will request the user to visit the nearest physical store to complete any pending or incomplete KYC formalities, or perform video KYC using the official app. They will never ask you to download and upload documents using a third-party app.
• “We caution the general public to beware of such fraudulent SMS messages and calls. Mobile users should not respond to these messages or calls, and should not download any apps or share any documents or information The COAI statement said. If you look closely, these scam messages usually come from either a mobile number or a random business message ID and not from official messaging channels such as Airtel, Reliance Jio or Vi use to send you service updates as well as any communication regarding your bills, recharge plans etc. Do not share any documents or details with these callers and do not share any information sent by unknown senders over SMS Do not click on the link.
