Karthik suggested that this is not the right time to talk about split captaincy as the primary focus is on the ODI World Cup

Veteran wicket-keeper batsman Dinesh Karthik feels that 2023 World The cup will be crucial for the BCCI to take a call on the split-captaincy in the Indian team. After the 2022 T20 World Cup, skipper Rohit Sharma has not played any T20I match as Hardik Pandya is leading the team in the shortest format. Some reports suggested India The transition period has begun and senior stars like Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli And KL Rahul will have to prove his mettle to be back in the T20I squad in the next season of the Indian Premier League.

However, Karthik suggested that this is not the right time to talk about split captaincy as the primary focus is on the ODI World Cup and India will play very few T20 matches before the tournament.

“If the case presents itself, why not? But right now it is not right for me to say for two reasons. One, India is playing only three T20s after this till the 2023 World Cup, after the IPL, it is facing the West Indies. Once the tournament is done, I think we will know where things stand,” Karthik told Cricbuzz.

The veteran wicket-keeper feels that all eyes will be on the 2023 ODI World Cup and if India manages to lift the trophy, there are high chances that Rohit can continue as captain in both T20s and ODIs if he so desires.

“If Rohit Sharma’s team doesn’t do anything special there, we could very well see a chance of split captaincy, I think the opportunity will present itself at that point. Whereas if Rohit goes on to achieve something special, we would all like to think differently and give him a chance in the 2024 T20 World Cup if he himself is ready to do so,” said Karthik.

The 37-year-old, however, heaped praise on Hardik and suggested that he wants to live and play the big game like Virat Kohli.

“At the moment, I believe Hardik has done a phenomenal job. He lives for the big game. After Virat Kohli, if I have seen anyone who wants the big game, it is Hardik Pandya. You have to put Bumrah in that list as well. As a batsman, Hardik Pandya likes such big opportunities.
