Vijay Varma, who stars as Captain Sharan in Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, received a call from Captain Sharan, who praised him.

Vijay Varma, who stars as Captain Sharan in the Netflix series IC 814: The Kandahar Hijack, shared at a press meet in Mumbai that he received a call from Captain Sharan himself. The real-life Captain Sharan praised Vijay’s portrayal, and his wife, Mrs. Sharan, also commended the authenticity of his performance.

During the press meet, Vijay Varma said, “Stories come to you at a certain point in your life when you’re ready for them. Or, sometimes, stories get you ready for something. But these things are so invisible. It’s really, like, too philosophical to kind of make sense of it. But I was deeply happy that Captain Devi Sharan enjoyed the work. He called and gave me a pat on the back. And also, Mrs. Sharan, she said, ‘I know this man more than he knows himself. And I can tell you that you’ve come very close to him’. So that was.. I think there was some responsibility that I didn’t really understand when I was doing it. But when I heard it, I felt like, Shayad meri koi responsibility thi jo maine thik se kar di.”

Meanwhile, Naseeruddin Shah has claimed that he was left ‘disturbed’ after the 1999 Kandahar Hijack of IC814. The actor recalled fearing a ‘wave of islamophobia’ after the shocking incident took place in 1999.

“I was about 50 when this happened, end of the previous century. I remember being extremely disturbed because I feared that it would provoke another wave of Islamophobia. Luckily, at that time, it didn’t. I remember feeling terribly concerned about the situation and what it would lead to. I was left with a feeling of unease. I could not pinpoint why I felt this but I did feel that the passenger and pilot went through a horrific time. No closure. I remember feeling this,” Naseeruddin said.

The Kandahar flight hijack refers to a dramatic incident that took place in December 1999, when Indian Airlines Flight 814 was hijacked by a group of militants. The aircraft, en route from Kathmandu to Delhi, was diverted to Kandahar in Afghanistan after being taken over by the hijackers. The standoff lasted for several days, during which intense negotiations and complex diplomatic maneuvers unfolded.
