IAS officer DM Surya Pal Gangwar has taken decisive action to enforce the Right to Education in Lucknow, issuing a 7-day ultimatum to 62 schools to admit children under the RTE Act. If these schools fail to comply, they face the threat of being sealed on the eighth day. During a meeting at the Collectorate, DM Gangwar admonished the operators of these prominent schools for not providing admissions under RTE, affecting around 1100 children eligible for admission in these institutions. Many children have been denied their educational rights due to these admissions lapses.
In response, DM Gangwar has demanded that these schools expedite the admission process. This firm stance by Surya Pal Gangwar aims to ensure that children in Lucknow can fully exercise their rights under the Right to Education.
The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday told the Madras High Court that it cannot implement the RTE Act in the CBSE and ICSE schools as these schools are not subject to the fee structure set by the government, unlike the matriculation schools.
State counsel A Edwin Prabhakar made this statement before the first bench, comprising Acting Chief Justice R Mahadevan and Justice Mohammed Shaffiq when a petition filed by V Eswaran, Marumalarchi Makkal Iyakkam in Coimbatore, regarding admission under the RTE Act came up for hearing.
The petitioner’s counsel submitted that some schools in the state are refusing admission because the distance between residence and school is one kilometre. He wanted the court to direct that schools teaching under the CBSE and ICSE syllabus also come under the ambit of the RTE Act as the state government has the power to do so.
The government contended that it fixes the fee structure for matriculation schools and on the basis of that structure it pays the fees for the students admitted under the RTE Act. Since the government cannot fix the fee structure for CBSE and ICSE schools, it is unable to implement the Act in those schools.
