‘I see Virat coming back big-time’: Former Pak batsman explains how Kohli will revive his lost form

It has been almost two years that Virat Kohli’s form is being discussed more than any other issue in cricket. The reason is his inability to convert good starts into big scores. He last scored a century in 2019 during the Day-Night Test against Bangladesh in Kolkata. Since then, Team India has toured three countries, played a few bilateral series at home, but the captain has been struggling to achieve triple figures.

The situation looked a bit complicated after Kohli decided to step down as India’s T20 captain, citing workload management as the main reason. Amid his inconsistency with the bat, former Pakistan cricketer Mudassar Nazar has said that the Indian skipper will make a strong comeback like former England skipper Graham Gooch, who revived himself in his mid-30s.

In his latest column for The Indian Express, Nazar said that giving up the T20 captaincy of RCB and India could help Kohli get his mojo back.

“I can draw a Graham Gooch analogy who, in his mid-30s, raised his game to the extent of being one of the best, scoring close to 9,000 runs in Test cricket. I am seeing Virat come back big time. Maybe, leaving Bangalore and India’s T20 captaincy now will have a positive impact,” wrote Nazar.

“Will the break help him, Virat is the best judge. If he feels he needs a breather to get back in form, it is his call. If they feel that more time is needed in between to come out of the lean patch, that is also their decision. It totally depends on Virat.”

Nazar drew parallels between Virat and Indian batting legend Sunil Gavaskar in terms of runs scored and dismissal patterns against the moving ball. He said that Kohli is more entrepreneurial than Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar.

“The big problem has been the ball going away from his body, which England’s James Anderson has taken advantage of over the years. Again, this is a problem that every batsman has faced, even the great Sunil Gavaskar.

“So, it is a common problem among all the batsmen, but the likes of Gavaskar made fewer mistakes. The similarity between Sunil and Virat lies in scoring so many runs for so many years. This is the reason why so many people like Virat. Virat is more entrepreneur than Sunil and Sachin. Suddenly, Virat is not scoring runs consistently, which can happen to a player who has been playing for a long time.
