South African cricketer Khaya Zondo has revealed that he has lost respect for AB de Villiers as he was their captain during India’s tour in 2015, which saw him sidelined for Dean Elgar in an ODI in Mumbai. Zondo was dropped for the series decider at the Wankhede as India and South Africa were locked 2-2 in the limited-overs series. He also alleged that despite being part of the squad, he was dropped in favor of Dean Elgar, who was not even part of the starting squad and was brought in from South Africa.
“The captain (de Villiers) called me to the side, away from the rest of the team and told me he was the one who felt I shouldn’t play. He was trying to explain himself and he was taking full responsibility for the decision,” Zondo read from his prepared presentation to the Transformation Ombudsman, ed. Dumisa Ntsebeza.
“I remember when he explained himself to me, having lost all respect for him as a captain, and as someone I looked up to as my cricketing hero because I couldn’t believe this man was himself for me. was trying to justify, and it felt like I should accept the decision as the judgment came from him.”
