‘I hope fast bowlers can give us 20 wickets in every Test against South Africa’: Cheteshwar Pujara

Senior India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara is confident that his team’s fast bowling unit will continue to do well and take 20 wickets in each Test match in the upcoming series against South Africa starting December 26.

The Indian team started its skill training on Saturday with a quality net session with all the leading batsmen.

“Our fast bowlers are our strength and I hope they will be able to utilize these conditions and give us 20 wickets in every Test match. Whenever we have played abroad, they have been the difference between the two sides,” Pujara told local media.

“If you look at the Australia series, even if you look at the England series, we have done exceptionally well as a bowling unit and I am sure that will be the case in South Africa as well,” he said.

Fast bowlers have played a key role in India’s success in overseas series in recent times.

There are no practice games due to the tight schedule and fears of the new COVID-19 variant Omicron have already cut short the tour and postponed four T20 matches to a later date.

Pujara said, ‘The good thing is that we have played a few Test matches in India.

“So, most people are in touch, and when it comes to preparation, the support staff has been excellent. They are supporting us well and we have five or six more days to go before we go into the first Test.

India arrived at the Rainbow Nation on 16 December and Pujara believes 10 days is a good enough time to prepare for the Boxing Day Test at Centurion.

“I am sure we have enough time to prepare and people are looking forward to this series. This is our best chance to win the first series in South Africa. So we all are eagerly waiting for it.”
