I have no doubt Jos Buttler is going to do a good job as England’s white-ball captain: Michael Atherton

Michael Atherton has defended Jos Buttler and said that things will get better for him with the captain stepping in. Buttler took over the captaincy charge from Eoin Morgan, one of England’s best leaders, ahead of the T20I series against India. However, it hasn’t been a perfect start for them so far as England lost the T20I series 2-1 and then they lost the first ODI by 10 wickets. However, the hosts came back in the second ODI to claim a 100-run victory.

Atherton feels the ECB made the right choice to name Butler as Morgan’s successor, leading him to the 2019 ODI. World Cup glory.

“It was absolutely the right choice to have Jos Buttler as the captain. There must have been one or two options that he would have discussed, mainly Moeen Ali. But Butler was the vice-captain and he captained the team from time to time in Morgan’s absence and did a pretty good job,” Atherton said on Sony Sports.

The former England captain said that modern-day cricketers come under scrutiny very quickly and suggested that everyone should give Butler some time to develop as a captain.

“It’s early days. I think in the industry as you know in the world of writing and television, we are very quick to make decisions right away. But I think you have to let it play out a little bit and you have to see it as it develops.” Gotta see.”

Atherton further emphasized that Buttler has a lot to offer in T20Is while in ODIs he bats in the middle order which gives him some relief.

“What I would say is that they have a lot on their plate in T20Is. Opening, captaining leaves a lot on his shoulders. But you know ODIs are a little different. He does not open the batting in ODIs. But it is still early days, but I have no doubt that he is going to do a good job as England’s white-ball captain. And I can’t see that there’s going to be a dramatic change in outlook since Morgan’s days,” Atherton said.
