Pathirana, who recorded an economy rate of 12 last night, failed to pick up a wicket against Rajasthan.

A poor bowling performance against Rajasthan Royals proved costly as Chennai Super Kings suffered a 32-run defeat in an Indian Premier League (IPL) match on Thursday. Sri Lankan fast bowler Mathisha Pathirana became the most expensive bowler for Chennai after conceding 48 runs at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur. Pathirana, who registered an economy rate of 12.00 last night, failed to pick up a wicket against Rajasthan. Pathirana’s poor performance angered the Chennai fans, but he found support from his skipper MS Dhoni. The World Cup-winning captain said the scorecard did not justify Pathirana’s performance.

“I thought Pathirana’s bowling was good, he didn’t bowl badly. I think the scorecard doesn’t reflect how well he bowled.” M S Dhoni said in the post-match presentation.

Pathirana made his IPL debut last year. But he could play only two matches in IPL 2022. With four wickets in as many matches, the 20-year-old has already proved his mettle in the 16th edition of the IPL. In international cricket, he has represented Sri Lanka in one T20I match.

Coming back to the game, Rajasthan skipper Sanju Samson elected to bat after winning the toss and the decision paid off. Rajasthan registered a mammoth score of 202. Openers- Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal started with a bang and got a solid platform for Rajasthan. Jaiswal took Rajasthan to a strong score by playing an excellent inning of 77 runs. After the match, Dhoni admitted that his bowlers conceded too many runs in the first six overs. “They scored a little above par. We gave away too much in the first six. Also, the wicket was great to bat on,” revealed the Chennai skipper.
