Former India cricketer Sunil Gavaskar believes that India’s star all-rounder Akshar Patel should be appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals in the IPL in the long run, saying that it will also benefit the Indian cricket team.

Axar scored 34 and later took 2 for 21 as Delhi Capitals registered their second win of IPL 2023, beating Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven runs on Monday night.

His all-round efforts earned him his first Player of the Match award of the season and veteran Gavaskar backed the Gujarat cricketer to lead Delhi Capitals.

“I believe that Akshar Patel should be appointed as the captain of Delhi Capitals. He is an honest player. He is in good shape. The Indian team can benefit from making him the captain of the franchise and performing well. All these things have to be done in the long run,” Gavaskar said on Star Play Cricket Live.

Washington Sundar dismissed David Warner, Sarfaraz Khan and Aman Hakeem Khan during the eighth over of Delhi’s innings as the Capitals went from a marginally stable position of 57/2 to 62/5. Akshar then shared a 69-run partnership for the sixth wicket with Manish Pandey to help the visitors post 144, which eventually turned out to be a winning total.

“I didn’t even realize what was happening. I had just ordered coffee and had to leave that cup of coffee as I found out we had lost three wickets in one over, so I had to run straight to bat. had to go for the post-match presentation

“Once I went out to bat I got a chance to think about what was happening. [Manish] Pandey and I were there and Pandey said the deeper we can take it the better because if we have a few runs we can struggle.”

With the ball, Axar Patel dismissed both top-scorer Mayank Agarwal and skipper Aiden Markram during the SRH innings with his left-arm spin.

“obviously [the pitch] Was a bit slow. The ball was stopping. Kuldeep [Yadav] And I have bowled in partnerships on Delhi wickets as well, so when I batted, I thought Kuldeep and I could trap the batsmen. So the more runs I can score, the better it is for us. So that was the plan and the way Kuldeep and I bowled, we had fun. I keep bowling to the batsmen but getting it [Markram] With the slower ball, which I enjoyed more,” he said.

Delhi Capitals will take on Sunrisers Hyderabad in their next match at the Arun Jaitley Stadium here on Saturday.
