‘I am man of the match’: Priyanka Tibrewal after Mamata wins Bhabanipur bypoll

even after losing Bhabnipur Trinamool Congress by-elections Mamata Banerjee On Sunday, BJP leader Priyanka Tibrewal dubbed herself the ‘man of the match’ as she managed to garner 26,500 votes in the chief minister’s bastion. “At many booths, TMC workers rigged but no action was taken. I want to request ‘didi’ (Mamata Banerjee)… please don’t send your party leaders (in future) to save ‘booth riggers’,” Tibrewal said.

“I welcome the mandate of the people but I must say that today I will call myself ‘man of the match’. The reason is- I contested from a seat (Bhabanipur) which is known as Mamata ji’s stronghold And despite being the chief minister’s stronghold, people (out of 57% votes) gave me more than 25,000 votes. It means a lot to me. I wholeheartedly appreciate people’s support towards me.”

Expressing disappointment over the BJP’s lack of strength at the grassroots level in Bhawanipore, Tibrewal said, “I personally believe that to win a seat one must have organizational strength, but in Bhawanipore, our organizational strength was not that impressive. But it is also a fact that against all odds a new young player (referring to him) managed to garner more than 25,000 votes and that too from Bhabnipur where the Chief Minister himself contested and put all his might in this area. So that he can win and retain the CM’s chair.”

BJP’s Rudranil Ghosh got around 45,000 votes in Bhabnipur five months ago, while Tibrewal got only 26,500 votes in the bypoll.

Tibrewal said she would continue to work for the people and “follow the orders of my senior leaders.”

She joined the BJP in August 2014 after being suggested by singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo and inspired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. She was Supriyo’s legal advisor.

In 2021, Tibrewal contested the assembly election from Entli, but lost to TMC’s Swaran Kamal Saha by a margin of 58,257 votes.
