To ward off the smell of decay, Chandra Mohan used agarbatti (incense sticks), phenyl and perfume and regularly applied them to the body parts of the deceased, which he kept in a refrigerator near him.

A 48-year-old man was arrested in Hyderabad on Wednesday for allegedly killing and chopping body parts of a middle-aged woman with whom he was involved in an illicit relationship over a loan of Rs 7 lakh. The arrests came after a week-long investigation, started after the discovery of the victim, identified as 55-year-old Yaram Anuradha Reddy, found decapitated at a dumping yard.

According to the police, the accused Chandra Mohan, a bachelor, was having an illicit relationship with Reddy for 15 years. Reddy was abandoned by her husband long back. As a result of their cooperation, the accused, who worked online in the stock market, provided accommodation to the deceased in a part of his ground floor residence.

Police said Reddy, a local finance agent, had given a loan of Rs 7 lakh to Mohan since 2008, which was outstanding against him. Police said that when the deceased kept pressuring the accused for the due money, the accused got irked by his attitude.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (South East Zone) Ch Rupesh said Mohan became increasingly frustrated due to the woman’s constant demands to repay the loan and the situation worsened on May 12. After an argument over the debt, he attacked her with a knife. He was stabbed on the chest and stomach, due to which he died on the spot.

To dispose of the body, he bought two small stone-cutting machines and used them to separate the head and split it into six parts. The severed legs and hands were placed in a refrigerator at his residence, while the rest of the body was stuffed into a suitcase.

On May 15, the accused wrapped the victim’s severed head in a black plastic cover, took an auto and dumped it on the banks of the Musi river.

To ward off the smell of decay, Mohan used agarbatti (incense sticks), phenyl and perfume and regularly applied them to the body parts of the deceased that he kept with him. The accused also sent messages from the victim’s phone to remove any doubt.

The woman’s severed head was found by local body workers on May 17 near Musi river in the city. After the information, Malakpet police station was alerted and personnel reached the spot.

A case was registered, and the police formed eight dedicated teams to investigate and solve the murder case. He examined the CCTV footage available in the surrounding area, which played a vital role in nabbing the accused.

The investigation of the case is being led by Police Inspector K Srinivas of Malakpet police station. DI L Bhaskar Reddy and the committed staff of Malakpet Police Station are providing valuable assistance in the investigation. ACP Malakpet, G Shyamsundar, is monitoring the overall progress of the case while ensuring effective coordination and monitoring. The officers are duly acknowledged for their extraordinary efforts in this matter.

The case is similar to the sensational murder case of Delhi that came to light last year. Aftab Amin Poonawalla is accused of strangling and dismembering his live-in partner Shraddha Walker in Mehrauli on May 18 last year. He stuffed the body parts in a refrigerator before dispersing them at various places in the national capital for several days to avoid detection.
