Hundreds of fish found dead in Guwahati water tank due to lack of oxygen

400 dead fish of different species found floating in Guwahati tank

Guwahati:

Hundreds of dead fish were found floating in Guwahati’s Dighalipukhuri water tank on Sunday. Examination of collected samples from dead fish and reservoirs revealed that the phenomenon was caused by a lack of dissolved oxygen in the tank and a high biological load.

After the detection of around 600 kg 400 dead fish of different species in the tank, Assam Fisheries Minister Parimal Shuklabaidya had directed the officials of the department to visit the site and find out the reasons behind the mass deaths.

Suklabaidya said, “The fish died due to sudden drop in oxygen level and high organic load in the tank. After investigation by the departmental officials, the fish died not due to poison but due to environmental degradation.”

As a short term measure, the department raised the oxygen level in the water by spraying water through pumps and creating wave action through mechanized boats.

The Dighalipukhuri or Tall Pond in Assamese – more than 500 meters long – is located in the Ambari area of the state’s largest city.
