Humid summer in Kashmir, relief to Jammu and Kashmir due to monsoon rains Reader

Srinagar: The heat wave continues in the Kashmir Valley with Srinagar recording the hottest day of the season at 34.2 degrees Celsius, while the monsoon rains on Thursday brought some respite to Jammu.

With the mercury reaching a new high in Srinagar this season, it was 0.2 degrees Celsius higher than yesterday and 5.1 degrees Celsius above normal, a Met official said. It was also the third highest point in Srinagar in the last 12 years. On 9 June 2021, Srinagar recorded 34.7 degree Celsius. The highest June temperature in Srinagar in the last 12 years was recorded on June 3, 2018 at 35°C. The highest June temperature in Srinagar was 37.8 degree Celsius, which was recorded on 29 June 1978.

Meanwhile, Qazigund recorded a maximum temperature of 31.9 degrees Celsius, up from 32.5 degrees Celsius the previous day. He said the temperature for the gateway city of Kashmir was 4.2 degrees Celsius above normal.

Pahalgam recorded a maximum temperature of 29.2 degrees Celsius, up from 28.9 degrees Celsius the previous day. He said the temperature was 4.4 degrees Celsius above normal for the famous resort in south Kashmir during this time of the season.

Kokernag recorded 30.9 degree Celsius as against 31.7 degree Celsius the previous day. The official said the temperature in south Kashmir during this time of the season was 3.6 degrees Celsius above normal.

The maximum temperature in Gulmarg was recorded at 24.2 degrees Celsius, up from 24.0 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said. 20.6 degrees Celsius is normal for the world-famous skiing resort during this time of the season, the official said, adding that the temperature was 3.6 degrees Celsius above normal for the famous spot in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district.

With Monsoon rains overnight, Jammu recorded a maximum of 31.7 degrees Celsius, up from 38.1 degrees Celsius the previous night, the official said.

He said the temperature in the winter capital of Jammu and Kashmir was 4.6 degrees Celsius below normal. Banihal recorded a maximum temperature of 28.8 degrees Celsius, Batote 25.4 degrees Celsius, Katra 27.4 degrees Celsius, while Bhaderwah recorded a minimum temperature of 32.7 degrees Celsius, the official said.
Earlier, the meteorologist said that the monsoon reached the plains of Jammu this morning.

An official of the Meteorological Department said, “From today, continuous rain is expected, sometimes, intense rain, especially in the morning hours in Jammu region, rain, not incessant, especially in the morning hours till July 5 likely to happen.” (GNS)
