  • Internet and mobile phone services have been affected in a major supplier outage
  • Sydney suburbs hit hard by Telstra internet outage
  • Melbourne users also reported problems with their mobile phone service
  • iiNet and TPG users also facing internet problem during outage

Millions of Australians have no phone or internet service after a massive telecommunications failure in services including Telstra, iNet and TPG on Wednesday night.

Optus, Internode and Vodafone were also showing growing issues.

Sydney suburbs including Mascot, Ultimo, Hornsby, Gladesville, Rouse Hill and Boulkham Hills have been the worst affected.

Furious users took to social media to complain about the unexpected outage.

One said, ‘If you respond to social outrage, get the issues rectified quickly.’

Mobile phone users in Melbourne were also reported to be having problems.

One user tweeted, ‘Hey @Telstra, I’m located in South Melbourne 3205 and barely running in 3G ATM.

iiNet’s problems with the Internet began around 7.20 pm and peaked shortly before 9 pm, when reports began to subside.

Melbourne was severely affected by INET problems, but there were also reports of issues in parts of New South Wales, including Adelaide, Canberra and Sydney.

Adelaide and Tasmania were most affected by the TPG outage, which began around 6.40 pm, with services gradually coming back online after 9 pm.

Most of the online issues appear to be related to NBN, with hundreds of reported outages on the high-speed Internet backbone.

Some users reported that they had DNS issues on their Internet connection, which were resolved by switching their ISP DNS servers to Google’s DNS servers in their network settings.

DNS servers act as the Internet’s traffic manager and direct online traffic from homes to websites in the most efficient way.

They are important for the smooth functioning of the Internet and usually back up the servers in case of failure. However, the backup also seems to fail due to the ISP suffering an outage.

Customer service lines were flooded by users seeking support, with call queues asking for wait times to exceed an hour.
