Coimbatore Municipal Corporation plans to improve tax collection by motivating officials and recognizing their contribution through an exciting competition in line with the Indian Premier League (IPL).
The civic body on Saturday took to Twitter to announce the Municipal Premier League (MPL). It has roped in Janagraha Center for Citizenship and Democracy, a Bengaluru-based non-profit organisation, to take several measures to motivate employees and improve revenue generation.
A tweet from Janagraha said, “We are delighted to partner with Coimbatore Corporation for the first ever Municipal Premier League in Coimbatore. Through MPL, we aim to achieve financial stability, thanking the revenue authorities for their contribution. Recognize and reward.
The initiative aims to increase the revenue of the local body, build a digital ecosystem to improve digital payments, improve transparency in tax collection and train the staff involved in revenue collection.
“Apart from improving collections over a stipulated time period, this initiative will also help in increasing the share of tax amount received through digital transactions,” said a source.
Coimbatore Corporation is trying to stabilize its financial position by eliminating unnecessary expenditure and improving revenue resources. The collection of revenue by way of taxes and non-taxes such as rent is being monitored by the Corporation Commissioner Raja Gopal Sunkara.
Data available with the corporation shows that till the end of September, the civic body had collected only 38% property tax, 10% vacant land tax and 22% water charges for the financial year 2021-22.
“As per the Solid Waste Management Rules, 2016, there is a provision to collect fee for garbage collection and processing from every household. However, the civic body has not collected it yet as it may not go down well with residents and politicians, ” said the officer.
