How to stop Google Maps from storing your personal location data

There was a time when people used to stop their vehicles or walk an extra mile or two to ask for directions after wandering on the way. Google helped solve the web by rolling out Google Maps. Now we have become so dependent on facilities that we do not even bother to remember the way to our destination. To make the user experience hassle free, Google Maps stores a bunch of data including your locations at all times. However, sometimes this storage of data creates an eerie feeling of being surveyed or tracked all the time. You can manually stop Google from storing your location. Here’s how you do it.

Use Google Maps in Incognito Mode

  1. Open Google Maps Application
  2. Tap on the avatar icon at the top-right corner. A list of options will appear.
  3. In the list, you will find ‘Turn on Incognito Mode’. Tap to activate.
  4. A message will flash on your screen letting you know that it has been activated. Tap ‘Close’.

Delete a day’s location timeline

  1. In this list you will see ‘Your Timeline’. Tap on it and then ‘Let’s go’.
  2. This will take you to a window showing your location history. Tap ‘Today’.
  3. Then tap on the three dots on the top-right corner of the screen.
  4. Tap on ‘Delete Day’ to delete it. Press ‘Delete’ to confirm.

Delete Your Location History on Google Maps

  1. In the list that appears after you tap on your avatar icon, locate Settings.
  2. Go to ‘Personal Stuff’.
  3. You will get an array of options. Tap on ‘Location is on’.
  4. This will redirect you to your phone’s settings. Tap the toggle to turn your location off.
  5. Go back to the array and tap ‘Location history is on’.
  6. Select the account you want to manage and toggle off Location History.
  7. You can also choose the auto-delete option to set a frequency at which the app will automatically delete your location data.

All the above options can also be executed through the web.

Disable Location History and Delete it

  1. Go to google.com/maps.
  2. Click on the avatar icon and then click on ‘Manage your Google Account’.
  3. Select ‘Data & Privacy’.
  4. Then select ‘Things you’ve done and places you’ve been’.
  5. Click on ‘Location History’.
  6. You will get the same options as you do in the application.
