Capri Global Holdings got the Lucknow franchise for Rs 757 crore.

“Today is a historic day in cricket as the bid for the teams of the inaugural #WPL broke the records of the inaugural Men’s IPL in 2008! Congratulations to the winners, we raised Rs 4669.99 crore in total bidding.

Also, while Chennai Super Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders did not bid in the auction, Royal Challengers Bangalore revealed an interesting strategy that took fans by surprise. Speaking to ESPNcricinfo, RCB chairman Prathamesh Mishra revealed how they put investment on hold to bid for the Women’s Premier League.

“We paused all of our investments in overseas teams to own a team that aligns with this philosophy and core value, and it gives us great pleasure to positively mark this achievement.”

Unlike some other teams, RCB did not invest in upcoming T20 leagues like SA20 and ILT20.

RCB Vice President Rajesh V Menon said, “We have been following the women’s league very closely and our scouting team has been eyeing women cricketers as part of the RCB hinterland scouting system for some time now, and It gives us immense pleasure. To see it all come together for a team ready to play for the inaugural edition of the Women’s IPL in the country.”

Earlier this month, the BCCI sold the media rights of the Women’s Premier League to Viacom18 for Rs 951 crore, fetching a per match value of Rs 7.09 crore for five years. Without bowling the ball, WPL has become the second biggest T20 league in the world after IPL.

The Adani Group, which failed to buy an IPL team at the time of the sale of the Lucknow and Ahmedabad franchises in 2021, has made its official entry into Indian cricket by acquiring a women’s team for the WPL. Adani Group announced that the name of the team would be Gujarat Giants.

Many were already calling the league the Women’s IPL but the BCCI secretary revealed the name on Wednesday.

“The BCCI has named the league – Women’s Premier League (WPL). Let’s start the journey.
