google mobile services Or GMS is an important suite of apps for all Android users. This suite has some of the most essential apps and more, all bundled together in one package. Android Police reports that a new rule in Android 12 prioritizes and adds a set of basic requirements to your phone’s “Safety & Emergency” settings page that manufacturers have to meet.
This rule ensures that every Android user has at least a basic level of protection against earthquakes and other deaths. Currently, emergency contacts, medical information, location services, emergency SOS, earthquake and emergency alerts are required for all apps under GMS rules, the report said.
Many of the features in Android have already been available for years, either directly by Google or provided by device manufacturers. Currently, it is considered mandatory for all regular phones and tablets.
“Emergency SOS” is one of the options on this list that may seem unfamiliar if you’re still on Android 11. This feature is new to Android 12 and was included in the Personal Safety app on Pixel devices. This feature was one of the first to appear during the 2020 Developer Preview. The SOS feature allows users to tap the power button five times to contact emergency services after waiting for five seconds.
The report also noted that many of these — including wireless emergency alerts, location services, and earthquake alerts — are all included in Android’s Settings menu via Play Services, but not all of them may be available in all regions of the world. Huh.
Not only the new GMS requirements, but screen readers for visually impaired users are also a mandatory component for the latest Android update. TalkBack may be the most famous of these services which can be included by pre-installing the Accessibility Suite app.
