An expert panel of the Central Government has recommended the Drug Controller of India (DCGI) to approve the corona vaccine ‘Covaxin’ for children between the ages of 2 to 18 years. Bharat Biotech, which makes Covaxin, has also submitted the trial reports to DCGI. If all goes well, Covaxin may soon be approved for emergency use.
In such a situation, you will also have many questions in your mind. For example, how effective will the vaccine given to children be? What kind of problems can children face after getting vaccinated? How will the vaccine be administered and what were its results in the trial? During the trial, the children were divided into three groups according to age. The first group was of children in the age group of 12-18 years. The second was for children aged 6 to 12 years and the third from 2 to 6 years. The vaccine was first tested on children aged 12 to 18 years. The children involved in the trial were monitored for a week. If the right result was found, then trials were conducted on children of 6 to 12 years and then on children of 2 to 6 years. Trial was conducted on 175-175 children of each such group across the country. Like the elders, everyone was vaccinated with .5 ml and after 28 days the second dose was given. Most of the children who participated in the trial were doctors. No, there was no negative effect of any kind on the children during the trial. All kinds of testing of children was done before the trial and testing was done after the trial also. After administering both the doses of the vaccine, the specialist’s team continuously monitored the health of the children. The children’s blood samples were taken before the second dose was administered. Then after 56 days of the second dose, then on 112 days and lastly 208 days after the blood sample was taken. During this, an attempt was made to know how effective the vaccine is in fighting the coronavirus? Its results were very good. Antibodies developed more rapidly and in greater quantities in children than in adults. People above 18 years of age had to face problems like fever, headache, body ache, weakness after getting the vaccine. More than 70% of such problems were seen in adults, but such problems were seen less in children. Only 5 out of 100 children complained of fever, body ache or headache after vaccination. Most of the children only complained of swelling and mild pain at the injection site. I was involved in this trial process. I can say with full responsibility that the vaccine is completely safe. Everyone should get their children vaccinated when the vaccination process starts. This will prove to be a game changer. With the help of this, the third wave of corona will be easily prevented from coming.
