KKR beat RR by 86 runs in Sharjah thus improving their net run rate by an impressive 0.587. Batting first, the two-time winners posted 171/4 – the highest total in Sharjah this IPL season, and then their bowlers Shivam Mavi and Lockie Ferguson shared seven wickets between them to land the sucker punch.

Before the start of the competition, four teams were theoretically in the mix. Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals, defending champions Mumbai Indians and KKR. After the result of the 54th match, only two teams – KKR and MI are in the field.

Can MI still beat KKR to make it to the playoffs?

On paper, yes. But it seems like an unlikely event. Records have to be broken if Rohit Sharma’s team hopes to reach the playoffs.

To begin with, the scenario only comes into play when MI bats first in their final league match against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday. Batting second will kill his chances.

And then there’s a trivial matter of MI scoring 250 plus runs.

Highest total in IPL history

Royal Challengers Bangalore holds the record for the highest total in IPL history, when Chris Gayle’s record-breaking 175 took them to 263/5 against Pune Warriors India.

RCB also has the next best score – 248/3 against Gujarat Lions. On the other hand, MI’s highest team total in the history of the league is 223/6, which they made against Punjab Kings in 2017.

Provided MI manage to post more than 250 runs, they will have to beat SRH by over 170 runs to surpass KKR’s NRR. Currently, the five-time winners have a poor NRR of -0.048.

Biggest margin of victory in IPL and T20 history

However, MI holds the record for the biggest win by runs in the IPL, when they defeated the then Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) by 146 runs in 2017.

Overall, Czech Republic has the biggest margin of victory (by runs) in the history of T20 cricket. In 2019, he crushed Turkey by 257 runs to set the record.
