House panel subpoena organizers of January 6 Trump rally

WASHINGTON (AP) On January 6, a House committee probing the Capitol uprising has summoned 11 officials who were involved in planning rallies in support of former President Donald Trump before the violent attack, which included a day of siege which the President made his supporters fight like hell. The announcement follows the first round of subpoenas last week that targeted former White House and administration officials who had been in contact with Trump before and during the rebellion. The committee said in a release on Wednesday that the summons are part of the panel’s efforts to collect information from the organizers and their affiliated entities on the planning, organization and funding of those events. Mississippi Representative Benny Thompson, chair of the committee, said the investigation included an investigation into how various individuals and entities coordinated their activities leading up to the January 6 events.

Thompson’s letters cite the efforts of representatives of the group Women for America First to organize a rally on January 6 and to communicate collectively with senior White House officials. The summons also referred to other incidents planned by the group in the weeks between Trump’s November election defeat and the January attacks. Among those the committee is seeking information from is Carolyn Wren, a veteran GOP fundraiser, who was named as a VIP adviser on an attachment to the permit submitted by Women for America First. During the campaign, she was a national finance adviser for Trump Victory, a joint fundraising committee between the presidential reelection campaign and the Republican National Committee. The AP has previously reported that Wren was involved in at least one call before a Trump supporter rally, in which members of several groups were listed as rally participants to organize credentials for VIP attendees. The panel has intensified its investigation in recent weeks as it seeks to dissect the origins of the rebellion by Trump’s supporters and find ways to prevent it from happening again. Trump loyalists beat and injured police as they made their way inside the building, destroyed property and sent lawmakers running for their lives. Reiterating Trump’s lies about widespread election fraud, he obstructed President Joe Biden’s certification of victory and deeply shook the US Capitol. (AP).
