New Delhi: Two brothers, aged seven and 12, were killed and two others, including the boy’s mother, were injured when a three-storey building collapsed in Old Delhi’s Sabzi Mandi area on Monday.
A fire brigade official said construction work was going on at a shop on the ground floor of the building and electric machines and hammers were being used.
“The building was vulnerable and it appears that the tremors of the machines contributed to the collapse,” the official said.

“Both the victims were returning home from school with their mother when the building collapsed on them. The woman was rescued but the children were buried under the rubble. A 72-year-old man, who runs a paan shop next to the building, was also trapped under the debris, but was rescued.
the building was located right opposite Robin Cinema hall in the area. Police said they received information about the accident around 11.30 am. Police have identified the dead as Soumya (12) and her brother pacific (Seven). The family lives in the neighboring Roshanara area. “Mother of the boys, ayushi (32), with the owner of the paan shop, Ramji Das (72), were taken to the hospital for treatment,” the police officer said, adding that the children suffered serious head injuries.
Residents of the area said that the woman was buying some household items from a shop when the building collapsed.
According to the fire department, around seven tenders were sent for the rescue work. NDRF Assistant Commandant Srinivas said, “At 1.50 pm we found the body of a boy. Five minutes later another boy was pulled out of the rubble. Two teams of NDRF were involved in the operation.
Rajiv Aneja, who lives in the building, told that the first three floors belong to his family. “A month ago, a man bought a shop on the ground floor. He was doing some construction work and we had warned him about the vibrations in the building, but he failed to heed,” he said.
Aneja’s nephew, Aryan, was in the building when he went downstairs so he miraculously escaped. “Luckily, most of my family was not in the building. One of my brothers is hospitalized and other family members had gone to see him. My mother had gone to a dispensary, Aneja said that 12 people lived on three floors of the house.
DCP (North) Anto Alphonse said police have registered a case and further investigation is on. “We will take action against the guilty,” he said. A case has been registered against one under sections 304, 288 and 34 of IPC. Mohak Arora, who is the owner of the shop where the construction was going on. “During investigation, we have found that some structures on the ground floor were removed last night,” said an investigator. He said that they have launched a search operation to nab the accused.
