Delhi Police advises people to follow traffic rules and not drink and drive

The Delhi Police on Monday said it has tightened security arrangements for the safety of motorists and pedestrians in view of Shab-e-Barat and Holi. Since both the festivals are falling together this year, police have made arrangements to ensure smooth traffic flow and prevent reckless driving or stunts on two-wheelers.

Apart from the police, over 150 company security personnel, 800 traffic police personnel and 9,000 local police will be deployed for Shab-e-Barat, officials said.

Police said that over 600 pickets and 1,300 motorcycle patrol teams would be deployed across Delhi and 759 traffic officers would be on duty at 283 strategic locations.

The advisory states that special teams of traffic police along with PCR and local police will be on duty on various roads to check drunken driving and violation of traffic rules. Radar guns will also be deployed to prevent incidents of over-speeding.

For Holi, special teams comprising 2,033 officers will be deployed at 287 major intersections and 233 drug and alcohol-sensitive points. “Further, as per the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, driving licenses have also been impounded in cases of drunken driving, red-light jumping, use of mobile phone while driving, dangerous driving and over-speeding and shall be liable to suspension for a term of not less than three months. Action will also be initiated against the registered owners of vehicles whose vehicles are being driven by minors/unauthorized persons, performing stunts, driving without license, etc.

Delhi Police has advised people to follow traffic rules and not drink and drive. “Obey the prescribed speed limit. Follow the traffic signals. Do not indulge in race or competition with other vehicles. Especially two wheeler drivers and riders should wear helmets and avoid triple riding.”

The Delhi Traffic Police has appealed to the public to avoid violating traffic rules, especially drink-driving, over-speeding, triple-riding, riding without a helmet and driving in the wrong vehicle.

Meanwhile, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) issued a statement saying that metro services will not be available on all lines of the Delhi Metro, including the Rapid/Airport Express line, till 14.30 hours on March 8.
