Prominent ministers and elected representatives of Thane also celebrated the festival along with family and party workers.
Shiv Sena leader and cabinet minister Eknath Shinde and MP son Dr Shrikant Shinde were seen celebrating the festival with family and later joined the celebrations at Tembi Naka along with party colleague and former mayor Naresh Mhaske.
The Minister also met Municipal Commissioner Dr. Vipin Sharma and celebrated the festival with his colleagues.
NCP leader and cabinet minister Jitendra Awhad also joined the celebrations at the party office along with party colleagues.
Several representatives of Marathi film and entertainment industry including director Viju Mane were also seen celebrating at Gadkari Rangayatan.
Several societies of the city arrange mini fests on the eve of Holi and a series of feasts such as group brunches along with rain dances the next day.
“We are celebrating the festival after two years. We have managed to defeat Covid and will make up for the lost years by celebrating with full enthusiasm,” said a resident of Ghodbunder Road complex.
The youth of the city also made the most of the festival in the post-Covid interval and celebrated an eco-friendly festival. Youths Jai Shinde and Hetvi Savla said that they started the festival in an eco-friendly way. “We did not use any artificial colours, but chose organic dyes and also avoided wasting water and plastic balloons,” he echoed.
While much of the city was drenched in Holi, starting with the arrangement of local festivals and rain dances, some residents started the festival by creating a difference for the society and ensuring the protection of the environment.
The local unit of the Maharashtra Andhashraddha Nirmulan Samiti in Thane collected about 300 puranapolis and distributed them among the underprivileged residents of the city edge.
“We requested the residents of Thane and Kalwa to build an additional Puranpoli for the needy. While one can be offered to the Holi deity as per the Poli tradition, the other can be donated to the needy. We managed to collect over 300 polis, which were later distributed among the needy in Hariom Nagar,” said Ajay Bhosale, a worker.
Meanwhile, the Koli community of Thane’s Koliwada celebrated a community festival a day before the actual celebration to encourage residents to come together with the importance of celebrating.
“We have adopted the concept of One Village One Holi for the last seven years and are urging residents to celebrate the occasion together. This will not only strengthen the bond between the community but will also ensure minimum impact on the environment,” said Malthi Patil, a former Shiv Sena councilor from Thane East.
