After working in television, films and web, actor Hina Khan is now all set to enter a new medium. She will soon be seen in Zee Theatre’s upcoming teleplay titled Shaadyantra, which is touted to be a thrilling thriller full of psychological intrigue. Woven around the primary human impulses of greed, ambition, self-preservation and vengeance, it also stars Chandan Roy Sanyal and Kunal Roy Kapur in pivotal roles.
The teleplay tells the story of a married couple, Rohan Tiwari and Natasha Malhotra Tiwari. Natasha is the heiress of a construction company, but lives a contented life away from business intrigues. Then a shocking murder changes Natasha’s life forever and investigating officer Mohan Khanna steps in to solve the mystery.
Talking about trying her hand at a play for the first time, Hina says, “I am glad that my wish of working in a play has come true and I am making my theater debut with Shaadyantra. I play Natasha who is very naive, trusting and giving, but then a tragedy forces her to look at her life and her relationships more closely and then her instinct of self-preservation kicks in. Always wanted to do theatre. This teleplay has given me an opportunity to be a part of the theater fraternity and I hope to be a part of more teleplays in the future.” The actor was last seen in the film Lines (2021), the poster of which he unveiled at Cannes Tha Film Festival in 2019. It also earned him an award at the UK Asian Film Festival.
Kunal who plays a detective in the teleplay says, “I am playing a cop for the first time, we have tried to create a more sensitive character who does his job without drawing too much attention to himself. It was good to try to give Mohan a certain depth and nuance that we are not used to seeing in mainstream portrayals. It was wonderful to be a part of this project.”
Shaadayantra is special for Chandan as it reconnects him with theatre, something he has always been passionate about. “I am deeply involved as an actor in the discipline of theatre, with stalwarts like Habib Tanvir, Tim Supple and Alyque Padamsee. I have been involved with the stage my entire career and it is great to once again experience the joy of table readings and long rehearsals. I also liked that there is more than one color to the characters in Conspiracy. My character is a smooth-talking hottie but also effortlessly switches between different moods,” he says.
Talking about the teleplay, Shailja Kejriwal, Chief Creative Officer – Special Projects, Zee Limited, says, “We are thrilled to premiere Shaadyantra, which is committed to creating and entertaining original and entertaining contemporary dramas for audiences. is part of our mission to choose theater as an alternative to .. Shadyantra also has strong psychological undertones like Gas Light, which was a 1938 thriller by British playwright Patrick Hamilton and continues to be referenced to this day. The play underlines that subtle often leads women to doubt their instincts. It also has an element of suspense and a thread of strong sisterhood that sets this story apart.
The murder mystery teleplay is all set to air on Tata Play Theater on 18th December. It will also be available on Zee5.
