Himachal gets second state university in 52 years

Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur formally dedicated Sardar Patel University, the second state-run university, to the people by inaugurating its two blocks here on Tuesday.

More than 141 government and private colleges in Mandi, Kangra, Chamba, Lahaul-Spiti and Kullu districts are affiliated to the university, which has been set up in the chief minister’s home district Mandi.

Speaking at the inaugural function, Thakur announced that college and university teachers would be provided revised University Grants Commission (UGC) pay scales and a notification in this regard would be issued within a month. He said that after the formation of Himachal Pradesh, the first State University, Himachal Pradesh University, was established at Shimla on 22nd July, 1970.

He said that Sardar Patel University Himachal Pradesh came into existence 52 years after the establishment of the University, which aims to enable the youth to pursue higher education closer to their areas. The Chief Minister urged the teachers and students of the University to work with passion and missionary zeal for the bright future of the institution and said that the University has been named after Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who is regarded as the Iron Man of India. is remembered. in respect of his contribution to joint construction India by integrating the princely states.

He also said that a statue of Sardar Patel would be installed in the university campus. Thakur said that the students coming from far flung areas of the State would be benefitted by the establishment of this University as Mandi is situated in the heart of Himachal Pradesh and would serve the students of five districts.

He said that having two State Universities would also increase the post-graduate seats and students would be able to take admission in higher education easily and the burden of Himachal Pradesh University would also be reduced. Recalling his college days, the Chief Minister said that in 1986-87, Vallabh Government College in Mandi had more than 4,000 students and even today it is the largest college in the state with more than 6,000 students.

He said that whatever he learned during his college days is helping him overcome the obstacles of life today. Thakur said that Rs 27 crore has been spent on the construction of Vallabh College campus and it will be completed by September. He said that it was a proud moment for him that an alumnus of this college dedicated the second university of the state to the people of Himachal Pradesh today.

He said that a medical university in Mandi has also been established at nearby Ner Chowk. Also, land acquisition for the greenfield airport at Mandi will start soon.
